Developing Educational Interventions for Children and Adolescents
The focus of this training will be upon finding, developing, and using evidence-based accommodations and interventions in facilitating successful outcomes for children and adolescents with TBI in the context of pre-injury and post-injury functioning. Various references and samples in the clinical and research literature will be presented.
Music Therapy & the Brain
We will first take a look at what music therapy is through several musical examples to learn what some fundamental elements of music are. We will then explore the way music and it's elements affect the brain, how music is processed, and what this means for rehabilitation and treatment for individuals with brain injuries.
Humpty Dumpty had a Great Fall: Preschool-Age Children & Brain Injury
This session will discuss pediatric brain injury focusing on preschoolers. Current research regarding preschool brain injury's effects on the developing brain will be explored. The session will discuss common causes, post-brain injury signs and symptoms, identification, brain development, sensitive learning periods of development, child versus adult brains, and key differences between TBI and other types of learning disabilities in children. Steps that parents can take to ensure their child's brain injury is relayed to school staff over the years will be shared. Preschool-age brain injury will be explored through the lens of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs).
Evidence-Based Treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Justin Johnson MD, the Director of Veteran Services at HopeWay in Charlotte, a Command Psychiatrist in the US Army Reserve, and an Assistant Consulting Professor of Psychiatry at Duke, is an expert in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Participants will learn about diagnosis of PTSD and evidence-based treatment options to care for Veterans with PTSD.
Evaluating & Assessments for Children with Brain Injury
We will start with an overview of the definition of TBI, giving examples of conditions that may be included under the most recently expanded definition. From there, we will discuss how we approach evaluations from a 'construct' perspective, rather than the standard school evaluation. Our outcome is not just about eligibility, but the focus is instead on developing interventions and recommendations that align with evaluation findings.
Communication and Brain Injury
Communication and Brain Injury is a workshop designed for the professional and/or family member(s) involved with the brain injury community. This workshop will discuss communication skills following a brain injury. We will also, define terminology, and language and cognitive deficits that are associated with brain injury and its disorders. This discussion will include persons who have had strokes and/or traumatic brain injuries. Simple group and individual intervention activities will be examined. In addition to recommendations for professionals and caregivers, the part that culture, interest, and lifestyle plays in recovery will be explored.
