Living with a brain injury at times makes it challenging to advocate for what you need because of difficulty communicating, remembering, or processing. As professionals working with individuals living with brain injury, every person’s need, desires, and wants can be different – so the “one size fits all” approach will likely only lead to frustration and rehabilitation plateaus. It can be stressful not knowing what each day will bring and if the next crisis is just around the corner, that’s why the Brain Injury Association of North Carolina is here to support you. Stepping back from taking control and instead empowering individuals can be some of the most rewarding work a person can do. Avoiding the easy “no” and rethinking where the “yes” can be can help to build independence, hope, flexibility, and creativity.
